Literature

What should adolescents read? I think that this is a complex question. I think it depends on who is answering this question. Many people might say that they should read the classics. Yeah I think they should read some of them. They should be exposed to them they have many merits to them. But I also think they should be encouraged to read about what they are interested in. Just like writing students should have a voice and choice in what they write. They should also have choice in what they read. I feel that reading is always dictated to students. Students are not often given a choice. I think that teens are more likely to read if they enjoy it and they get to choose. I think another factor is what the story is about. Can they connect with the text? If they don't think they can then they probably will not want to read it. I think that there is some strides in encouraging reading. I know in the elementary schools March is Reading Month. Another suggestion I have is that school districts should pick books to be on currculum that is educational but not a bore to read. I know that I hate reading when it isn't a very interesting book. If the language is dry and slow moving it is going to take me twice as long to read it versus a book that is interesting and humorous, and fast paced.
